Microsclerotherapy Red Vein removal
This is a technique used to treat spider or thread veins on the legs. It involves the injection of a sclerosing agent into the small veins using a tiny needle. This substance irritates the lining of the vein causing them to close. The blood will stop flowing through the threadvein, which serve no real purpose, and then the vessel is absorbed into the body. This absorption process takes approximately 4 weeks.
Microsclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment for spider veins. The British Association of Sclerotherapists maintain high standards of practice in sclerotherapy, and have helped microsclerotherapy gain a reputation as a safe and effective treatment for telangiectasia in the legs.
Are there any side effects? The procedure is not especially uncomfortable but afterwards there may be some mild itching, redness or mild discomfort. This typically settles within an hour or so. Immediately after the treatment the leg looks red and can have a hive like appearance to the treated areas. This fades very quickly, usually over an hour. The vein may look darker red to brown as the body absorbs the old blood vessels away. It is normal for the veins to look worse before they look better. Very occasionally bruising occurs or there is a staining effect on the skin for larger vessels and this may take 6-18 months to fully resolve.
How many treatments will I need?Several treatments are often needed to completely get rid of the veins; on average 2-4 treatments. Repeated treatments are recommended 8-12 weeks apart. Whilst the veins treated are destroyed, new ones may form over time if you are prone to them. Development of new veins within months or years after successful treatment, does not constitute a treatment failure, it demonstrates the need for occasional repeated treatments over time. Some clients prefer to have an annual check up and early treatment of any new veins in these cases.
Can microsclerotherapy be used to threat the face?
Microsclerotherapy is not a safe treatment for the feet or face. ThermaVein is a safe option in these cases.
Can microsclerotherapy treat varicose veins?
People who have underlying varicose veins will need these treating by a surgeon first if they are to have successful removal of their threadveins by microsclerotherapy or Thermavein. You will be examined and checked for varicose veins with a Doppler during your first appointment to check you are suitable.
What do I need to do after treatment?
You can continue with life as normal after the treatment but we do advise:
Wearing class 2 compression stockings or tights for a week afterwards (optional)
Avoiding hot baths or showers for a few weeks
Avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.
Avoid waxing for 4 weeks.
